THE ARCHITECTS
Born in Florence in 1937, holding a degree from the School of Architecture of this city, Jean-Pïerre Buffi arrived in Paris in 1964 and is hired by Jean Prouve.
Following various jobs, especially at the Paris Urban Center, he completes his first major buildings in the mid 1970s : the "Casa Lusena" in West Milan, the National School of Arts in Cergy-Pontoise (outskirts of Paris) and the French Cultural Institute in Lisbon, Portugal.
During the 1980s, Jean-Pierre Buffi both IBM Regional Headquarters in Lille and Bordeaux, two major French cities. In 1995, he creates Buffi Associés with his wife and architect Marianne Buffi, who is also in charge of running the studio day-to-day operations.
He then follow-ups by working on or supervising high profile housing programs -in particular for the Paris Housing Authority (RIVP)- and gets more international exposure in 1991 thanks to the complex urban operation of "Les Collines de la Défense" (with its Great Nave, a project selected then by the French President), without a doubt one oh Jean-Pierre Buffi most impressive achievement to date. He then follows-up by supervising, as Lead Architect, Paris largest Urban Redevelopment Aera of Bercy, including each building's architect, sets the Main Outline Rules and Regulations, selects the constructions materials and even conceives key design related detail.
In 1992, Jean-Pierre Buffi wins the international tender for the Société Générale (French second largest bank) World Headquarters on the Austerlitz embankment, overlooking the Seine river. Unfortunately, due to financial and regulations constraints, the project was dropped.
Between 1994 and 2000, he rebuilds Marseille's (France' second largest city) Vélodrome Stadium to accomodate key matches for the 1998 Soccer World Cup, then designs the University of Vaucluse in the heart of 13th century old town of Avignon, the school of medicine and pharmacy at the University of Normandy (city of Rouen), and the Paris-based headquarters of French-German pharmaceutical giant Aventis.
The studio then works on large scale urban aeras redevelopment competitions for Stockholm (Sweden), Hamburg (downtown extension toward the harbor), Munich (new quarter development for Siemens, including office buildings, housing, shopping mall), Turin (Winter Olympic Games 2006 buildings, including World Media Village), and Boulogne, in the outskirts of Paris (upscale housing and offices on Renault car arker former site).
Buffi Associés completed in 2004 as finalist a high profile international competition for the redevelopment of Milano Fiera, and has completed, as the city lead architect, major urban constructions in Turin, Italy, for the 2006 Winter Olympic Games (media village, hotel, shopping mall, craftsmen center). In the summer of 2004 his National Museum of Prehistory was officially opened in Les Eyzies de Tayac as well the new media cnter in the city of Toulouse.
In 2007/2008, Buffi Associés completed a fashion department store for Galeries Lafayette in downtown Lyon, as well as a full city block made of en hotel, high quality housing and shops in the center of Bordeaux. The studio has also finished conceiving a large office building in Boulogne-Billancourt, a lush suburb of Paris, for Amercian investors and completes at the end of 2009 a new building (classroomsn amphitheaters) at the University of Normandy in Rouen.
In 20109, the studio has been actively working on several urban and architectural prestigious projects such as luxury condo towers in Pisa, an hotel tower in Florence, a residential building in Montpellier, a shopping mall in Perugia's historic center and last but not leaxst a mega futuristic environment friendly virtual urban development project in Marseille as well as two luxury hotels/convention center/wellness center on the French riviera.
In november 2010, Buffi & Associés and AIA Associés proudmy announced the launch of Intens-Cité. The new joint venture is dedicated to large scale cutting edge urban planning projects. Intens-Cité is developing in 2012/2013 such ambitious projects at La Défense, Nantes, Bordeaux and Paris.
